Young Australian Harmonises School, Sport and Service to Others

12 year old Australian young man, Eli Essery, packs a lot of good things into his week.

In addition to going to school, doing his homework, and playing cricket, he also attends Martial Arts classes twice a week.

Eli also makes time to help his congregation as well as his local community, the recently flood-ridden city of Lismore, New South Wales.

Each Sunday he serves his local congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by passing the sacrament, which is similar to the communion in other Christian denominations.

Once a week Eli attends a youth activity at his church meetinghouse, 40 minutes from home. He always brings his friend from school along. At these activities they play sports, learn new skills, and serve in the community.

Recently Eli and his school friend went together to a youth service afternoon to do gardening for people needing some extra help.

After the recent major floods in Lismore and surrounding towns, Eli joined others in helping families clean up their homes and yards.

Eli lives with his mum (mother), his Nonna (grandmother), and their dog, Lily.

Eli's mother is the local Relief Society President (head of a local women's service group) and has a full-time job, so Eli helps out around home and is learning to cook.

Last year he received the “school spirit” award at his school. This year Eli received his cricket coach’s “most improved player” award.

As soon as he can Eli wants to visit the Brisbane Australia Temple. When he is a few years older, he says he definitely wants to serve a full-time mission.
