Working Together to Tidy Up a New Zealand Neighbourhood

“Come and Help” service project brings out dozens of volunteers, young and old

Members of the Flaxmere New Zealand Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints assembled on Saturday 19 February for a community service project in Flaxmere, near Hastings, New Zealand.

Each ward (congregation) was assigned a specific area to pick up rubbish along the streets of their town.

The bishop (lay minister) of each ward led their teams as they collected refuse in neighbourhoods and in industrial areas.

Volunteers worked together in teams allowing both young and old to serve together.

Each team met up at Flaxmere Park, where stake leaders had organized a “Sausage Sizzle."

“This project was a rewarding way for each ward member to feel connected to their community in a fun and meaningful way,” said Anthony Morley, bishop of the Flaxmere 2nd ward.
