Taking the Fight Against Diabetes to New Levels in Tonga

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints continues to support the Tongan government in its efforts to fight diabetes in the Pacific nation.

Partnering with government agencies as well as charities such as Pacific Assist, Furniture for Schools Charitable Trust, and Amanaki Fo’ou, the Church is committed to helping people already impacted by the disease as well as reduce the incidence of further cases.

Last year TVNZ estimated that 15,000 out of a national population of 100,000 suffered from the disease.

At a meeting in Tonga last weekend with Deputy Prime Minister, Hon Semisi Sika, representatives of the Church and the charities discussed ways to improve health outcomes among Tongan communities.

Some of those ways include encouraging more physical activity among young people, donating sports uniforms and equipment, and bringing in expert trainers to run fitness sessions.
