Members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Brisbane suburb of Eight Mile Plains recently attended a family history-themed community day.
The event, which took place earlier this month, was hosted by the Eight Mile Plains Australia Stake of the Church. A stake is a group of Latter-day Saint congregations in a geographical area.

Around 400 guests had the chance to visit exhibits and take part in family history workshops. Experts including the Queensland Church Historian, and representatives from Queensland State Archives, Logan River Family History Society, and Karawatha Family History Centre were on hand to help novices get started on researching about their ancestors.
In the workshops, participants started mapping out their family trees, learning about easy-to-use online research tools to help them discover family connections from the past.
To help guests get a feel for the benefits and joys of family history research, a few local Latter-day Saints displayed their own ancestral records and family items. Kathy Dean shared her heritage in photos, wood working, pottery, and a century-old kilt.
Visitors were invited to join a Facebook group to connect with other family history enthusiasts, and to continue conversations and share research tips.
A jumping castle, sausage sizzle and face painting added to the fun.
One guest, Marlene Glass, said it was a “wonderful day.”
Desley Murphy also had a good time. “My friend invited me to come. It’s been a fantastic event with something for everyone.”
To help people connect with their ancestors, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers a free online family history database called FamilySearch.org, with over eight billion searchable names.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that as spirit sons and daughters of Heavenly Parents, we are all members of the family of God, and that family relationships can extend beyond the grave through temple ordinances.
