Painting with Friends Uplifts a Fijian Community

Members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came together recently to help the people of their community by painting the Josaia Methodist Church in the village of Lomanikoro, Fiji.

Close to 60 teenagers and young adults donated six hours each to wipe down walls and paint the inside of the church.

The Josaia Methodist Church serves over 200 villagers of Lomanikoro.

“It was great to see the youth and young adults of the Navatuyaba Ward (Latter-day Saint congregation) joining with their friends from the Methodist Church to work together today,” said Latter-day Saint communication director for Fiji, Sulueti Kama, about the volunteer effort.

Oveti is the Methodist Church Steward, which is an appointed administrative elder. He said,” We are very grateful to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for helping our village church.”

"This helping hands activity has given me a sense of love and selfless service to those in need," said Latter-day Saint leader Lote Qoroya. "The Saviour is a good example of selfless love to all. He has shown us the way to serve others."

Latter-day Saint scripture emphasises service to God and to one’s neighbour.

The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ, states:

“And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God,” (Mosiah 2:17).
