New Tools, Plus 100 Trainees, Equals Over 250 New Houses

A collaborative project to build new homes is underway in Tongatapu and ‘Eua in the Kingdom of Tonga.

The project is in response to the impact of Cyclone Gita which damaged numerous homes in this area earlier this year.

Over 100 trainees, age 18-50, have been the recipients of new tool kits and safety gear to be used in this endeavour.

Elder K. Brett Nattress of the Seventy and the Pacific Area Presidency recently met with participants in the project.

Trainees are working alongside master tradesmen and will learn the practical building skills necessary to earn them a Certificate II in Carpentry from the Tonga Institute of Science and Technology upon completion of the program.

The project is expected to span from November 2018 to February 2019.

The necessary lumber is being salvaged from the many coconut trees that fell during Cyclone Gita.

This collaborative effort is being supported by CARE Australia, Tonga Skills, Tonga Institute of Science and Technology, MORDI, Caritas and LDS Charities.

The project will improve the lives of many people in this area.
