Love of Country and Culture Draws Latter-day Saint Man Back to Vanuatu

In February of 2016, Brian King accompanied by his wife and small family traveled to Vanuatu to accept the position of Coordinator of Seminaries and Institutes for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Having served a mission for The Church in Vanuatu, Brian knew that there would be adjustments to culture, food and climate, but his love for the country and its people drew him back—this time with a wife and children.

“I wanted to come back because I love Vanuatu and the saints,” said Brian. “I love the seminary and institute program and knew I would be able to help there.”

While in Vanuatu, King achieved much. In addition to supporting the Church’s seminaries and institute program in Port Vila, he traveled to outer islands, training teachers, building relationships and spreading good will among students and parents.

During his tenure in Vanuatu, the programs he administered saw great improvement and achievements especially in the outer islands of Santo, Ambae, Tanna and Malekule where accessibility and communication are a great challenge.

Brian and his family left Vanuatu on 18 April, but his love of the work has left a lasting impact on students, families, friends and members.

Of his stay in Vanuatu, Brian says, “These were the best years of our lives; we loved being in Vanuatu.

Members and friends gathered prior to the family’s departure to honour them with a “going away” get together. Words of appreciation and gifts were shared with the King family.
