The following message was written by Elder Ian S. Ardern, Pacific Area President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on the same day that members and friends of the Church across the Pacific Area gathered in meetinghouses to discuss the 2021 Pacific Area Focus of the Church.

This weekend, during the second hour of our Church meetings, ward and branch members were introduced to the 2021 Pacific Area Focus. A short video clip from the Area Presidency was used to help members understand the focus areas.

You can view the video again at

You will notice that the presentation was NOT called an Area Plan; we have confidence as an Area Presidency, that you can make your own personal and family plans. What was introduced is the Area Focus, the idea being to remind you about what prophets and apostles are focused on that needs our attention.

To further assist, we have updated the online App that supports the Pacific Area Focus. A lot of Church members have already downloaded the App and discovered that it is free, comes with good instructions, has short helpful video clips, helps to focus your thinking, has a place to record and date your personal goals and is easy to use. It even has a little insight about how to set your own meaningful goals and a place to record them.

To find the app on your device you:

  1. Go to the App Store
  2. Push the "Search" button
  3. Type in "Pacific Area Focus"
  4. Locate the following icon which will appear (see image below)
  5. Push "Open" and it will download to your device (it will open to the 2021 version)
  6. You are set to explore and enjoy

Preach My Gospel reminds us that "Goals reflect the desires of our hearts and our vision of what we can accomplish." Elder M. Russell Ballard, Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, has taught, "I am thoroughly convinced that if we don’t set goals in our life and learn how to master the techniques of living to reach our goals, we can reach a ripe old age and look back on our life only to see that we reached but a small part of our full potential."

Setting goals has certainly helped me with my progress in numerous areas. For example, when I was 17 years of age, I set a goal that I would pass my University Entrance Exam. I had failed the examination the previous year as I did not have a goal to pass and was therefore too easily distracted. Setting the goal gave me something to strive for, defined my focus, and motivated me to pay the price to succeed…and yes, I did pass the examination!

As an Area Presidency, we invite you to learn about the 2021 Pacific Area Focus, to use the Pacific Area Focus App personally and as a family to set goals (or simply write them down on a sheet of paper), and to enjoy "Walking in the Light of Christ."

Enjoy your week.

Elder Ardern
