Getting to Know Two Latter-day Saint Missionaries

"Young and enthusiastic, with their immaculate suits, bicycles and name-tags, Elder Hodgkiss and Elder Tanner are instantly recognisable as missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," reports the latest edition of Perth's Weekend Courier.

The article continues: "But what drives these 20-year-olds in the prime of their lives to leave friends and family behind, and spend two years ministering to often reluctant people on the other side of the world?

For Elder Tanner, an engineering student from Oklahoma and Elder Hodgkiss, a medicine student from Melbourne, it was a matter of faith.

'Being a missionary is a sacred calling,' Elder Hodgkiss said.

'We are not here just to convert people, but also to love them.'

For two hours each morning they study the Bible and the Book of Mormon before spending from 10am to 9.30pm serving the community – they might work delivering food, gardening and labouring for someone who is unable to, or playing games with elderly people."
