Furniture Arrives from New Zealand to Help School Kids in the Cook Islands

Church humanitarian organization and partners again join forces to make a difference for children in the Pacific

Surplus school furniture from New Zealand is again bringing blessings to school children in the Pacific Islands thanks to the ongoing partnership between Latter-day Saint Charities and Pacific Assist Trust. New containers just arrived in the Cook Islands carrying furniture, books and other supplies that will go to schools in Rarotonga and other islands.

The first items were delivered to Takitumu School. Helping Hands from the members of the local Latter-day Saint congregation turned out to help unload desks, chairs, trolleys and over 50 cartons of books.

The containers will continue on to the ‘Pa Enua’ schools in the Outer Islands of Penrhyn and Manihiki who will receive similar items.

Along with the school items and basketball hoops, uniforms were also delivered to the Cook Islands Sports and Olympic Committee.

Danielle Tungane Cochrane, Secretary of Education for the Cook Islands, expressed her appreciation in a letter to Piltz Napa, the District President for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints there.

“Providing equitable access to quality learning experiences and resources is a key focus of the Cook Islands Education Master Plan, and through a partnership of this size, this project has certainly helped us to continue enhancing opportunities for learning,” said Secretary Cochrane.

“Donations like what has been received from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints contribute so much to creating teaching and learning experiences for all our students and teachers that are supportive, relevant and well connected.”

The donation was covered by Cook Islands Television in an interview with Carly Ave of the Takitumu School and President Piltz. The story appears at 2:55 into the broadcast.

Latter-day Saint Charities is the humanitarian organisation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and sponsors relief and development projects in 195 countries worldwide.

Pacific Assist is a Charitable Trust based in New Zealand that facilitates the donation of school materials to Pacific Islands schools.
