Fiji LDS Church College Wins Four Awards at National Schools Performing Arts Festival

Students from Fiji LDS Church College won four awards this week at a national music, dance and drama competition for schools.

The event, called Tadra Kahani, involved students from ten schools from across the country.

Fiji LDS Church College picked up awards for Best Performance Concept, Best Dance and Choreography, Best Lighting, and Best Music. The school, owned and operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also placed second overall on the night.

“This only happened through the great generosity of students, parents, teachers and alumni who gave a lot of their personal time and energy out of school hours,” Principal Michael Carthew said. “The fact that these kids had no dance training, classes or even much experience is significant.”

“The students did us proud and performed extremely well.  A key to their success was the involvement of a very talented parent, Sue Datt, who offered her services generously and the volunteer base grew from there.”

Mr Carthew said the highlight for him was after the event. “Our students all gathered outside and hugged and cheered and jumped for joy and sang the school song. The winning school even stopped their celebrations to watch them.  It actually showed great gratitude on the part of our students — just happy to have been so well recognised and rewarded after all their hard work.”
