Cyclone Keni Causes Damage in Tonga

Church provides shelter to people seeking refuge

Tropical Cyclone Keni moved through the Tongan islands last night generating strong winds and causing some damage, but not as much as Cyclone Gita which hit earlier this year.

LDS Service Centre Manager, Garrick Parr, estimates that 1,500 to 2,000 people sought shelter overnight in meetinghouses of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Matangi Tonga Online reported today that patients staying at ‘Eua Hospital were evacuated to a nearby LDS meetinghouse after half of the hospital’s roof was ripped off during the storm.

All Latter-day Saint missionaries are safe and well.

LDS schools were closed today as people assessed damage which mainly involved fallen trees and broken power poles.
