Church Supports Effort to Reduce Drownings in American Samoa

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is working with government and community groups to decrease the number of drownings in American Samoa.

This week the Church donated $25,000 to the American Samoan government and Pago Pago Rotary Club which are spear-heading the community initiative.

The need for swimming pools in American Samoa is driven by the territory's annual rate of accidental deaths by drowning which is seven times higher than other parts of the United States.

Government, church and community leaders agree that American Samoan children need better access to swimming pools and lessons to reduce drownings.
