Church Helps Hospital Provide Patients with Clean Water

A new water purifying machine is providing patients with clean water at the government’s hospital in Tarawa according to a spokesperson for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mr Ataake Tekanene.

A 'Skyhydrant' water purifying machine was donated by the Church earlier this month. A hand-over ceremony on 5 October 2012 marked the donation and installation.

"Clean water is so important for all of us, especially our family members and friends who are in hospital for surgery or other care," Mr Tekanene said. "We hope that this gift will help people recover more quickly from their illnesses."

Kiribati Director of Public Health, Dr. Bwabwa Oten, said the machine would save the hospital about $800 (AUD) per month as they would no longer need to boil the water.

Radio Kiribati and the Uekera newspaper reported on the installation of the new water purifying system.
